Where are We in the World of Software?

I read an article on a web page this morning which a friend sent me a link to and I could not relate to it at all.

The article of the title is “Interactive Charting - the next evolution in Business Intelligence” and is about easy to use interfaces being the key to understanding business data.

My intial emotional thought was “Errr… Yes! What’s New?”

To explain this thought consider the analogy of a reference book with lots of data.

The article  seems to imply that we have been at the stage where such was not put into paragraphs to make it easier to digest, not being spread over pages rather than on a scroll the length of a wallpaper roll, not developing chapters so that there are digestible sections, not putting an index so that we can easily find relevant information.

In the software/internet browser world I belive we are slightly ahead of the time that the article seems to imply we are/have been in, or am I just a geek?
