Value Your Permanent Links (Web Page Addresses)

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008

I recently changed the way that WordPress (which runs this blog) creates page names of all the pages that it generates.

The new page naming convention will be better for me in the long term as when I now update a Post and especially its date, only the year is used in the name.

Previously, the full date was used and everytime I updated a Post and it’s date, the address of the Post changed. This was not good for search engine registration nor other site pages linking to this site, but changes to one or two pages didn’t make a lot of difference.

I set WordPress to now simply use the year.

So unless I bring a previously published article over to a new year (which should be infrequent compared to changing the day and month as well) then the page name will remain the same.

What does all this have to do with valuing the address of pages? Well… As the new setting in WordPress changed all the page names, I noticed that the traffic to the site went down to almost 10% of what it was before.

As I’ve decided to keep the new page naming convention, I can now only be patient whilst the search engines re-register the new named pages.

I’ve been through the loop of changing page names and loosing considerable traffic. Please learn from this.
