Set Forever —

Am I Becoming a Philanthropist?

I just had a chat on the phone with a good friend at The HoBB about Set Forever and what I see it doing, and he said that I was becoming a philanthropist. I asked him what one was and he said that someone who has reached a certain level in his (or her) life and now wants to spend their life doing good for others.

Moving home and changing looks.

Now that I’ve got a good drive for my Set Forever concept, I thought I’d update the old logo with a new, but modest, one.

I’ve also installed Word Press on the main Set Forever site so that it has it’s own blog for news updates / what’s going on.

The first fund raising project.

After considerable thought, I have decided to raise funds to pay for the costs of looking after my gran at St Mary’s Hospice in Birmingham, UK.

Even though the hospice is a charitable cause and does not expect any funds from my gran or the family, I thought it would be very inconsiderate indeed if a donation was not made for their support to date and any in the future.

We, as a family (including my gran) can only afford to pay a modest financial donation, but I believe what they have given to my gran (and the family), since the consultants at the hospital discharged my gran in mid 2005 surpasses any figure that I could think of. Basically, I believe that my gran would not be alive today if it were not for St Mary’s Hospice.

Don’t underestimate those that you know and their abilities.

After many months of trying to find out how raised funds can be maximised (i.e. not unnecessarily taxed until they have been allocated to a cause), I got the answer from my regular accountant.

As I need to raise significant funds, I thought I’d ask the charities commission, the inland revenue and another accountant who deals with larger projects than I have managed recently. None of the individualĀ sources had answers for me and simply referred me to the other sources. I went round and round in circles and gave up for a while whilst I had to attend to my gran’s needs.

It feels right to get back to an idea I had.

Alex Tew, creator of The Million Dollar Home Page raised one million dollars to help pay for his studies using a simple yet different advertising model on the Internet.

I then saw on his site that he had a break/holiday and was working out what to do with himself and all the interest that he had. Personally, I thought that he would do something much greater using his site and idea as a base, and he has done something, but I’m frankly disappointed that his next project (pixelotto) is more or less the same as the first but it effectively doubles the one million dollars advertising space amount into two million dollars with the extra one million dollars given (after all the advertising space has been sold) to someone who has clicked on one of the randomly selected adverts.

Off on a tangent for a while.

Just in case you’re wonde4ring why I’m not keeping my updates up to date. Well… it’s because I’ve been working on a personal project.

I’m still doing web development for clients but I may not say much on w-k.net as often as before.

If you don’t hear from me here then go to my Set Forever blog to find out what I’m doing.

Set Forever

I came back to work in early January 2006 after a short break and listened to a news story on television about a guy named Alex Tew who created a website called “The Million Dollar Homepage” in order to help fund his university degree studies. His idea was quite simple; to sell pixels on the home page of his site on which a buyer can place an image with a link to a website. The total value of all the pixels came to 1 million dollars. The last set of pixels were auctioned off and the million dollar limit may have been exceeded.

Anyway, I thought Alex’s idea was great… and it was because it worked. Alex sold all the pixels and probably made more money than he required to get him through his studies.

On the night of hearing the story, I couldn’t sleep as something in my head was telling me “You can do better! You can do better!”

I tried to get on with day-to-day life and forget what my thoughts were telling me as I thought it could be a selfish sub-conscious message telling me to do something in order to make a quick buck.

I eventually found quality time to consider my thoughts and spoke to a few people about them.

After a bit of reflection I convinced myself that there was room for improvement in giving more value to people, doing my bit in my life, and perhaps to develop an idea which could be handed over to willing and capable people who would look after my idea when I wasn’t here anymore.

My idea is Set Forever where you, with or without handing over money, will have the opportunity to have a space forever for what you want and what is possible with legal and political currencies. However, as I don’t think that anyone has, or can offer, “foreverness”, I need to be able to make real the opportunity of foreverness, and this is what I will be doing over the coming future on this site at setforever.net.

If you have control over a website and want to, you can help me to help myself to help you, by linking to SET Forever (the web address is http://www.setforover.net).
