What Makes Our Choices? Do We Have Free Will?

May 13, 2011

We are generally brought up and learn to believe that we have free will and freedom of choice.

Well, it seems that our ideas and thoughts about what we are about to do come to our brains before we become aware of them as choices.

Watch the video below to see about our brain having the ‘knowing’ of a choice before we become aware of it.

Section transcript:

That has got to be the most shocking experiment I think I’ve seen on this journey.

The fact that when I become conscious of making a choice, that John can 6 seconds earlier predict what I was going to do before I even realised what I was going to do.

I mean that is absolutely extraordinary.

6 seconds is such a long time.

I mean I sort of don’t find it so disturbing that OK sure some part of my subconscious mind is building up to a conscious decision.

But John by looking inside my head, knows, his conscious knows before I consciously know what I am going to do.

That is, that is really shocking.

Another example of our choices and free will.

In the video below, even though the timing is less (0.195 seconds), it is again said that our brain has a thought of the choice to eat chocolate before we become aware of the choice.

Who or what is having the thoughts and making our choices?

Let us consider an example situation of two people having a conversation.

One starts the dialogue with either spoken word or an implication from a body action, which the other person reacts to either by speech or body action.

This conversation continues until a goodbye, or at best an au revoir has been accepted.

If the thoughts that create the feeling or desire to converse by speech or body action are not coming from either one or the other person, then both people are effectvely having a conversation that is not “theirs”.

So I now ask you to consider who or what is having the conversation.

The answer seems to be in the transcript from the first video above.

John’s consciousness knows before the presenter’s consciousness knows.

In the two people conversation, their consciousness knows, and the individuals become aware of the thought a little later.

In quantum physics, it is said that the non-tangible energy of the zero point field, or consciousness, is all there really is.

It, therefore, seems that consciousness is having thoughts in brains of humans, which humans later become aware of to feel as if they are making choices, having thoughts and acting on them with their own free will.

I will leave that there for you to contemplate.
